Teacher - Mr Carey

Greetings parents, citizens and students,
Doesn't time fly when you're having fun! Welcome back to another term of learning and fun. I'm sure 2C students will continue from where they left off with the hard work. Students in need of a maths fix logonto mathletics. New tasks have been set on 10th April for those few students who've completed all their tasks. Checking today (30th April) 20/24 students have been assigned the maximum amount of tasks so there's plenty of activities that haven't been completed.

It was really lovely to see lots of parents who came in to see the fantastic work their children have done so far this year. Some portfolios have been returned to the classroom but many are still missing in action. Please return these ASAP. Thank you.

Talking and Listening Task (term 2)
Early in term 2 all stage 1 students (1D, 1R & 2C) are to prepare a speech (1 - 2 minutes duration) to give to their classmates where they argue a particular point of view e.g.
1) Dogs make better pets than cats   2) Cats make better pets than dogs
3) Snakes make better pets than ...............       4) ................... make better pets than .................
5) Television is good.  6) Television is bad
7) Are computers good.  8) Should animals be kept in zoos? 9) Is facebook a good or a bad thing? etc
These are just a few suggested topics but I think these are good topics so choose a topic and discuss the main arguments, reasons, points of view, facts etc with your children to give them some background and ideas.
Below is a speech I've just written to give you an idea of what teachers are after.

Sample Speech - Television is Bad for Children
There are many reasons why TV is bad for children. As a society we are becoming more and more obese and TV has got a lot to do with that. Instead of being out in the sunshine and fresh air riding scooters, bikes and skateboards, kicking balls, catching fish and running around, we are spending too much time sitting around indoors glued to the box eating the rubbish it advertises we should eat and watching shows like 'Biggest Loser.' Kids and adults are losing their ability to play and interact with one another because they spend so much time watching TV. Instead of playing sport we are watching it.
TV broadcasts a great deal of material that's unsuitable for children. There's drug use, nudity, offensive language, sex but worst of all, violence. Every other movie shown has violence. Have you watched the news lately? War, murder, assault, robbery, doom and gloom. Get the picture? Children are much better off without all this negative influence. No wonder schools have problems with violence in the playground. TV is jam-packed with violence and TV has a way of influencing us, whether we are aware of it or not. It is a very powerful force that brainwashes us.
So as you see, there are many arguments supporting my position that TV is bad for children.

Points to Remember
*On Mondays we need to remember to bring in our library books to exchange.
*On Tuesdays we have stage 1 P.E. (2C,1R and 1D) in the afternoon.
*On Wednesdays we have Mrs Denz at 10:10 for Health and Music and Zumba.
*Choir is on Thursdays right before recess.
*On Fridays we have stage 1 Sport
Mathletics
Students need to take care when logging on and use capitals and dashes where necessary. It makes it much easier for children to get into the habit of using the shift key to make capitals for their usernames because their passwords need to be typed in lower case letters.
Homework
Please encourage your children to learn their words and do their homework each week. It's really important for students to complete their homework each week. I don't set a great amount of work but what is set is important to their education. Of course, home reading is also important.
